Chumba Casino Review: The Original Sweepstakes Site, Showing Its Age
Chumba Casino from VGW pioneered the sweepstakes model in the US. We checked its state restrictions, app listing and redemption rules to see if it still beats the newer rivals.
Our verdict
Chumba is the best-known name in sweepstakes casinos and has in-house slots that rivals do not carry, but its restricted-state list is long, and review sites put the cash prize minimum at 100 Sweeps Coins. Newer competitors advertise lower thresholds and quicker redemptions. Play it for the slots, not for a quick cash-out.
Best for: Casual slot fans who want a free, familiar sweepstakes brand

Sweepstakes casinos work like this: you play with Gold Coins that have no cash value, and a second currency, Sweeps Coins, can be redeemed for prizes if you win. Chumba Casino popularised that model in the United States. The question for this review is whether being first is still an advantage, now that newer sites compete on redemption speed and game count.
Chumba's pages are geo-restricted, and the machine we used for captures sits outside the US, so the main site showed us only its availability notice. That notice is useful in itself, and it is the best place to start. For redemption rules we relied on two independent review sites, and we flag every number from them as reported, not verified. We did not redeem a prize for this review.

Where you can and cannot play
The official notice says Chumba is currently not available in Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, Montana, Nevada and Washington. A second, longer list covers states where only Gold Coin play is allowed and sweepstakes prizes are not, beginning with California, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York and Tennessee.
That matters more than any game. A player in New York or California can enjoy the slots, but cannot cash anything out. If you are in one of those states, Chumba is a free social casino and nothing more. Check your state before you buy a single coin package.
How a sweepstakes site makes its money
Gold Coin packages are the revenue source. You may take part without buying anything, and the store screenshots carry the "No purchase necessary" notice and "Void where prohibited by law", but the packages are what the business sells. Sweeps Coins usually arrive as a free bonus alongside a package, or through free daily and mail-in routes.
Our advice is firm: a Gold Coin purchase buys entertainment, never a cash balance. Do not buy coins expecting to redeem them. Spend only what you would pay for a game, and stop there.

The games
The App Store listing calls Chumba a social casino with jackpot slots and stresses in-house titles: "Experience exclusive, in-house slot games!" That is a real difference. Many sweepstakes sites lean on licensed third-party games, while Chumba's parent VGW builds its own. The screenshots show cartoonish, character-driven slots rather than the licensed brands you find on regulated real-money sites.

Redemptions: the weak point
Review sites agree on the broad shape. The cash prize minimum is reported at 100 Sweeps Coins, valued at $100, and identity verification with photo ID and proof of address comes before the first payout. Processing is reported at one to five business days, with the sources disagreeing: one says bank transfers take 3 to 5 days, another says 1 to 2. One reviewer also notes a 60 day limit on Sweeps Coins after your last login, though that comes from a single source and may be out of date.
Compare that with rivals. Several newer sweepstakes sites advertise lower cash minimums and faster payouts. We have not tested those claims here, so we will not name numbers, but the direction is clear and it is the reason Chumba scores in the middle of our scale.
The app listing is new
On Apple's store the Chumba app shows version 1.0.21, released on 19 October 2026, at about 67 MB, with a 4.7 average from only about 550 ratings. Compare that with the 148,000 ratings behind BetMGM's app. The low count is not a warning about quality. It simply means the listing is new, so the score tells you little yet.
A budget that keeps it a hobby

The third store image shows a jackpot win. Store art always shows the best case. Typical sessions end with a lower balance, and sweepstakes slots carry a house edge like any other.
Decide the monthly figure you would happily spend on a mobile game, and treat it as spent the moment you pay. Never use a card you cannot afford to see charged. Turn on the purchase limits and take the free daily coins as the main way to play.
Who should play
Chumba suits a relaxed player in an eligible state who wants free slot play, treats Gold Coins as a hobby expense and reads the redemption terms before chasing a prize. It does not suit anyone who wants fast cash-outs, anyone in a Gold Coin only state, or anyone tempted to buy packages to win back losses. The house edge applies here as everywhere. If play stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
